You have been abducted. There's no other word for it. You awaken, groggy and confused, to a sleek, sterile room and a computerized greeting explaining that you have been selected to appear on Channel 69's "The Station", an intergalactic reality show that broadcasts non-stop and is focused on the more salacious content of people's daily lives. Which is to say: sex. You may go along with it, you may argue, you may ask simple questions, but you're shown a document that does indeed have your signature on it accepting the terms and conditions of participating. Whether or not you remember signing it isn't relevant to the powers that be and the computer-generated welcome directs you to a sleek little box containing a piece of jewelry unique to you - be it a necklace, bracelet, earring - that is explained to be your lifeline on The Station. It acts as a phone, a credit card, and GPS for The Station, allowing you to browse the intranet, social network, manage your bank balance, and most importantly, view your Card.
Cards are unique to each individual Player of The Game, the main entertainment guide for The Station and the only way to return home. Arranged like a Bingo card, each cell on the grid of 25 squares briefly details an intimate act the Player must perform. For completing a task, a player is awarded the equivalent of $1K USD. A completed line earns $5K, an X nets $10K, a frame gives $16K, and a blackout offers $25K, and a ticket home, if desired. Since tickets are limited for each departure, however, you can always get a new card that doubles the profits of the last one and continue you earn as you wait!
The greeting explains that you've been assigned housing at no immediate cost, and while there is no set rent specification, you're expected to interact with other Players to pay for room and board. Any simple intimate act of a Player's choice is enough to maintain their modest living conditions in a one-room studio apartment, but each completed cell of a card opens new opportunities to advance one's position in the unofficial hierarchy of The Station. Simply put, the more you're willing to participate and compromise, the more comfortable your stay will be.
Putting on your jewelry item ( coded to your DNA and inert for anyone but you ) gives you an easy to navigate head-up display visible only to you, letting you view the most basic information about other players, chat in the social network, make private calls, and use a map of the entire space station that is, unsurprisingly, colossal. A luxury space station orbiting a beautiful resort planet in space unfamiliar to you. Gravity is maintained comfortably ( though zero-g chambers are available for a variety of uses ) and there are enough diners, shops, and entertainment venues to last several lifetimes for any individual. The station has a system in place that emulates weather conditions on a mild planet, but for some areas is adjusted for the novelty of experiencing tropical, winter, or desert conditions in controlled environments. It isn't unusual to find oneself needing a supplementary wardrobe for a few weeks, depending on the interest of viewers.
The Viewers decide the conditions under which the Players live - within reason. Every month the Viewers vote on weather and events, causing conditions to change and challenge Players, who are not warned of the alterations to come. It can be as simple as a summer rain with mild aphrodisiacs in the air or as terrifying and complicated as a Player waking up to find their physical gender temporarily changed to a new binary identity. Channel 69 and the Viewers are not interested in the comfort of Players, only their own amusement.
There is no real crime tolerated on The Station ( ironic considering your arrival is suspect ) and a private law enforcement firm is always watching with the Viewers. Typically the very real threat of being ejected into space is enough to keep most from considering criminal activity. However, in a place where drugs are legal and all forms of sexual exploration are encouraged, what might be an actual crime is debatable. The only major laws one cannot break are damaging the integrity of the space station in any way, and violating an unwilling Player. For any acts of dangerous violence or force, Players must sign waivers and go to one of the many virtual arcades available. Real sexual assault is not tolerated and is punishable, in fact, by death. However, if a Player consents to the unknown requirements of another Player's cell fulfillment in the VR, they may - in a virtual setting - experience things almost too real that the station law enforcement is not in any way obligated to punish the aggressor Player for.
Players can and sometimes do die. This is an unfortunate fact of life. While Channel 69 provides some of the best health and medical care in the expanded universe, they can't offer indefinite life and youth. For free. For those who continue to provide entertainment for the Viewers and thereby open themselves to joining the higher echelons of society, there are many interesting technological advantages available to them, including physical augmentations, extended life spans, or anything they can imagine that science can provide.
